Analog Product Redesign

Dymo LetraTag Label Maker

Goal: To analyze the issues of an analog product and create a more successful user experience.

 The Product

The Dymo line of label makers is beloved by many an organizing aficionado. The LetraTag model offers a range of design choices, from font styles to decorative elements. I myself use this product to organize my home, and in my use of it I found some issues with the interface. I set out in this project to figure out the root cause of these issues and discover how I could create a more successful design. This redesign is a student investigation and not affiliated in any way with the Dymo brand.

 User Persona

Next, I built a user persona and journey based on a real user, Alex, who I observed using the label maker.

The original keyboard design featured an alphabetical layout, which myself and other users found a bit painstaking to use. I changed it to a QWERTY layout similar to a mobile phone so most users would be already familiar. I did consider a horizontal layout to allow the buttons to be larger, however as noted above, it was important to accessibility to allow for one-handed use.
